Ackermann review: problems of electron microscopy for bacteriophages
Review of bacteriophage electron microscopy by H.-W. Ackermann (Advances in Virus Research, 2012). It argues that the quality of phage TEM micrographs has slipped since the 1970s, citing a survey of about 130 phage papers since 2006 in which 70 showed low-contrast, unsharp or otherwise poor images, and recommends purifying specimens, improving digital contrast and regularly checking magnification with test specimens.
