ASST Fatebenefratelli Sacco starts compassionate phage therapy for a Pseudomonas aeruginosa pressure ulcer in Milan

On 4 August 2025 ASST Fatebenefratelli Sacco announced that its infectious diseases department had started phage therapy for a patient with a pressure ulcer infected by antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, described as one of the first cases treated in the world. The compassionate-use treatment, coordinated by Dr Matteo Passerini with the University of Pisa's biology department and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (personalized phage production), eradicated the bacterium in repeated wound cultures and improved the lesion, making the patient a candidate for a skin graft.
