Diana Pires (University of Minho, Portugal) and colleagues published a new Scientific Reports paper describing the design and assembly of synthetic Pseudomonas aeruginosa phages made by knocking out up to 48% of a phage's genes of unknown function. In vitro and in vivo studies of knock-out phages showed similar properties with wildtype counterparts, suggesting this strategy could be used to make space in the phage genome for genes of interest that can enhance treatment.
