Eawag studies phages for hospital surface disinfection

Eawag researchers found that phages combined with chemical disinfection improved removal of pathogens from surfaces. Treatment outcomes differed by bacterial growth form; more than 99% of free bacteria and wet biofilms were removed, and applying phages before disinfectant improved removal from wet biofilms. Further study is needed before practical use.
