Joaquín Martínez Martínez (Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, Maine) and colleagues published a new paper on viral carbon and nitrogen assimilation by microbes, showing protists and bacteria can obtain significant carbon and nitrogen from viruses, representing an important flux in marine biogeochemical cycles.
