Marina Mahler (University of Otago) and colleagues published a new paper on arabinosyl-hydroxy-cytosine DNA modifications, showing that these modifications enable phages to evade DNA-targeting CRISPR-Cas and restriction systems while remaining sensitive to RNA-targeting defenses.
