Phage communities in toothbrush and showerhead biofilms correlate with their bacterial hosts (Frontiers in Microbiomes)
Querying 34 toothbrush and 92 showerhead metagenomes, researchers identified 22 complete, 232 high-quality and 362 medium-quality viral OTUs, with viral richness correlating with bacterial richness. Low sequence similarity to references and many unannotated genes indicate many novel, uncharacterized phages in these household biofilms.
