Phage genomes are usually identified based on sequence similarity to genomes already in databases. Kimmo Sirén (The GLOBE Institute, University of Copenhagen) and colleagues published a new preprint showing rapid discovery of novel prophages using biological feature engineering and machine learning. Using their feature-based approach, they reanalyzed publicly available datasets and discovered consistently more phages (and faster) compared with state-of-the-art tools.
