Rage against the mean: a perspective on measuring fitness of individual phage particles
A perspective arguing that traditional bacteriophage methods measure population averages and miss variation between individual particles. It advocates optical microscopy and flow cytometry approaches that can reveal phenotypic heterogeneity across the infection cycle: binding kinetics, genome entry, replication, coinfection dynamics and particle stability.
