Shelf-stable phage tablets with a bioluminescent reporter enable high-throughput phage screening (Nature Communications)
A portable library of solid tablets, each encapsulating one phage with luciferin and luciferase stabilized in a pullulan-trehalose sugar matrix, detects phage-mediated ATP release as light when bacterial cells burst. The platform identified target phages for multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus within 30-120 minutes.
