Systematic review of phage therapy in people with cystic fibrosis: 51 patients in 19 studies (International Journal of Infectious Diseases)

Terlizzi and colleagues report a systematic review in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases of phage therapy in cystic fibrosis: 19 studies covering 51 patients and 52 phage treatment courses, mostly against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Microbiological improvement was reached in 35 of 51 cases (68.6%), FEV1 improved in 74% (20/27) and 41 of 52 had no adverse events; the authors conclude phage therapy appears generally safe and well tolerated and call for further well-designed studies given small, heterogeneous series.
