In this new paper in Frontiers in Microbiology, Qin Qi (Macquarie University, Australia) and colleagues present evidence that temperate and virulent (lytic) bacteriophages (phages) carry integrons. Integrons are mobile genetic elements that capture, express and re-arrange mobile gene cassettes. This discovery establishes a new route for lateral transfer of these elements and their cargo genes between bacterial host cells.
