BiomX, a phage therapy biotech company, just announced that it's licensed new bacterial targets for commercialization of phage therapies for Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC; a rare, progressive liver disease). The targets: strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, discovered by Dr. Takanori Kanai and colleagues at Keio University School of Medicine. The presence of these strains disrupts the gut epithelium and leads to liver inflammatory responses. BiomX has phages that target these strains, and is developing a cocktail to treat PSC.
