Hypersaline environments harbor the highest concentrations of virus-like particles reported for aquatic ecosystems. Rodrigo Sanchez-Martinez (University of Alicante, Spain) and colleagues investigated episomal phage maintenance in the salt-tolerant bacteria Salinibacter ruber. They saw that episomal maintenance of the phage and lysis inhibition allow for host-virus co-existence under high MOI infections specifically.
